Building Beyond the Game: Drew Shore
Episode 12 of The PuckPedia Hockey Show features former NHL player and current agent Drew Shore, who opens up about his path from pro hockey to player representation and entrepreneurship. Shore discusses his time at Wasserman, how hockey’s off-ice culture is evolving, and his passion for helping athletes transition beyond the rink.
“Working at Wasserman gave me a front-row seat to how the game operates at the highest level,” Shore says. “Seeing how players like Auston Matthews think about their contracts, marketing, and endorsements was something I really enjoyed.”
Shore dives deep into why hockey players have traditionally lagged behind other sports in personal branding — and how that’s starting to change.
“For so long, hockey players have been afraid to show who they truly are,” he explains. “Your everyday sports fan connects with you as an individual. If players aren’t willing to show that side, people turn away and have so many other people to root for. But I think that’s slowly changing with the younger stars stepping out and showing their personalities.”
He also reflects on the business side of the sport, sharing thoughts on contracts, cap management, and the evolving NHL landscape.
“The actual game of hockey is in the best place it’s ever been,” Shore says. “The skill level of young players today is ridiculous. But on the management side, we need more fresh blood willing to take big swings — leverage offer sheets, make bold trades — to create more movement and entertainment across the league.”
After several years at Wasserman, Shore took the leap to branch out on his own, representing players in the NHL, AHL, and overseas while balancing new business ventures.
“I wanted to spend more time on the business side of things outside of hockey,” Shore explains. “Some of my clients were close friends, and it’s been rewarding to help them make better decisions than I did at certain points in my career.”
Whether talking about player contracts, personal branding, or career transitions, Shore’s perspective bridges the worlds of sport, business, and identity — offering a thoughtful look at what comes next after the final whistle.
