If Carey Price formally retired, his cap hit would immediately be taken off Montreal's team cap hit.  However, if he formally retired, then he would no longer receive the salary remaining on his contract.  The much more likely scenario is that Price remains on Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR). In that case, Price still receives his salary, and Montreal receives cap relief through LTIR
