Extensions

Asked Jul 1, 2024 by Carlos
When extending players with a year remaining on their current contract, do they play out there current deal then the following year start getting paid on the new deal? Or does the extension start coming out of this years salary?

A player's active contract can only ever be altered through a buyout. Therefore, when players sign an extension, it always starts after the current contract is completed and does not impact the current contract at all, with one exception. If a current contract does not include a trade clause in the final year, the new extension can include that the final year of the current contract has a trade clause added to it.
