Ferland Injury & Retirement
What happens if Michael Ferland retires? Let's say prior to the start of this upcoming season the doctors say he can't play anymore and he's forced to retire. How does that effect his salary and his cap hit to the Canucks?
Answer
It's very unlikely that Ferland would retire. If he technically retired, he would no longer receive his salary in his contract. If he did retire, his contract would be over and his cap hit would come off the Canucks Cap total. The more likely outcome for injured players is to be on the injured list if they're no longer able to play. When that happens, they continue to be paid their full contract. The team can put the player on Long Term Injured Reserve, and potentially exceed the salary cap by up to his Cap Hit.
