Requirements for attempting to return from LTIR

If a player is on LTIR and is generally assumed to not return (i.e. Carey Price), does this mean he would have to continue all possible avenues to return to the game for the duration of the contract?

For players that have injuries that are expected to be career ending, the requirement is generally that they must complete a team physical during training camp each year. Once that physical has been failed, and the medical team determines that the player is unable to play that season, then they are eligible for LTIR.
