If the Rangers traded Mika Zibanejad, could they retain salary for this season only and then have the acquiring team pick up the full salary for the remainder of the contract?

If a player is traded with retention, the retention must be for the remainder of the contract. If a team retains on a player, they cannot re-acquire them for 1 year if they are still on the same contract that was retained.
