Signing Bonus Retention
Asked Feb 26, 2025 by Jared
If Pittsburgh were to trade Karlsson with retention at the trade deadline, how would his next two signing bonuses on July 1st 2025 and 2026 change if at all?

When a player is retained, the retained % applies to the cap hit and all compensation going forward. So, if Karlsson was traded with retention, San Jose is responsible for paying 13% of his signing bonuses due to their retention, Pittsburgh would pay the % of his signing bonuses that they retained, and the new team would pay the remainder.
