Brock Goaltender Inks Two-Year Entry-Level Contract With Oilers
By Evan Davis
After a stellar rookie season that saw the netminder take home Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Rookie of the Year honors, Brock Badgers goaltender Connor Ungar signed a two-year Entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers that starts in the 2024-25 season.
PuckPedia.com reports that his contract in each year includes a salary in the NHL of $775,000, a signing bonus of $85,000, and a minor-league salary of $82,500. The $775,000 is the league minimum salary, while $82,500 is the maximum minor-league salary for a player on an Entry-level deal. Ungar is represented by Daren Hermiston of Wasserman Sports.
Ungar spent his junior hockey career in the Western Hockey League (WHL) playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings, Red Deer Rebels and Moose Jaw Warriors. Ungar saw most of his playing time in Red Deer and Moose Jaw, where he was a combined 47-16-1 during the regular season and 6-4-2 in the playoffs. In 34 regular season games with the Rebels, Ungar had a 2.43 GAA and .911 SV%. After being dealt to Moose Jaw the following season, Ungar remained consistent and posted a 2.58 GAA and .925 SV% in 38 regular season games for the Warriors.
In his lone season with the Badgers, Ungar was spectacular en route to a 20–6-0 record where he had a 2.15 GAA and .932 SV%. In six playoff games, Ungar was 3-3 with a 2.33 GAA and .928 SV%, getting his team to the semi finals of the OUA West men’s hockey playoffs before falling to the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold in three games.
Ungar carries numerous OUA West Awards with him to Bakersfield, where he is said to report following his season with the Brock Badgers. Along with winning OUA West Rookie of the Year, Ungar also took home OUA West Goalie of the Year, OUA West All-Rookie Team and OUA West First All-Star Team.
It is also worth noting that this is the second time in the last five years a Brock Badgers goaltender has inked an Entry-level contract with a NHL team. Back in the 2018-2019 season, now Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson signed a two-year Entry-level contract with the team following an impressive season with the Badgers. Thompson had similar numbers as Ungar, going 18-6 with a 2.22 GAA and .934 SV% and won a Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023.
Ungar will now look to add to the legacy of successful Brock goaltenders and has a serious shot to take over the starting job for the Bakersfield Condors. With the uncertainty in net for the Edmonton Oilers and Ungar only being 22, the future is bright for the young netminder.
