James Štefan, son of former number one pick Patrik Štefan, is signing with the Edmonton Oilers as an undrafted free agent, per PuckPedia.com, who had the report first. Štefan will make $775,000 at the NHL level, $82,500 in the minors, with a signing bonus of $95,000 and a games played bonus of $80,000.
Štefan is 20 years of age and spent the year in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks, where he had 48 goals and 51 assists in 64 games. According to the PuckPedia.com report, Štefan had around 6-8 teams interested in him, but is choosing the Edmonton Oilers, who won him over. He will end his WHL career with 109 goals and 145 assists, good enough for 254 points in 251 games.
Štefan had a really impressive first full season with the Winterhawks back in the 2021-2022 season, where he erupted for 34 goals and 79 points in just 68 games. Last season saw Štefan net only 22 goals in 64 games, but he was still able to muster up a point per game average with 42 assists.
Now heading to Edmonton, the place where his dad famously missed an empty netter while playing for the Dallas Stars. James’ father will now have the opportunity to cheer along with the fans of Edmonton, as his son will look to make a name for himself in the pros. The 6-foot, 185-pound forward will look to make a name for himself first in Bakersfield before hopefully progressing to the National Hockey League.
