What happens to Henrik Lundqvist salary cap hit and contract if he decides to retire a year before the contract expires?

If a player retires, they don't get paid and their cap hit comes off the team's Total Cap Hit. If Lundqvist retires this summer, his $8.5M Cap Hit will not count against the Rangers next year. However, if he does that, then he won't get paid the $5.5M remaining for next year. Therefore, it's very unlikely that a player retires early before their contract is completed.
